Did you know that stating your intentions aloud to someone currently more successful than you can lead to a 95% success rate in achieving goals? Experts say that’s because when performance is measured, performance improves.

A study done by the American Society of Training and Development a few years back found that success rates for completing goals varied greatly. For instance, only 10% of people who merely had an idea achieved their goal. Those who made a plan to accomplish their goals were successful 50% of the time. But a whopping 95% who had someone else hold them accountable achieved their goals!

Why this is true isn’t certain. But conventional wisdom says it’s because once someone reveals their goals to another person, they don’t want to show up next time with nothing to report. Having a coach, mentor, or fellow entrepreneur hold them accountable for following through on their intentions, it appears, is an incredible motivator.

The person or persons you choose to hold you accountable are there to remind you of your goals and original intention in launching a business. Here’s what to look for.

1. Ask. Find someone you feel you can trust to honor your dreams but hold you responsible for achieving them.
2. Agree. Create a plan with your accountability partner and put structures in place to track your progress.
3. Act. Unfortunately, goals don’t achieve themselves! You, and only you, can put words into action. It doesn’t matter where you start, but as the saying goes, “just do it.”
4. Assess. Discuss with your mentor things like whether you’re moving in the right direction and changes you can make to improve your growth.
